Brett, I was there last year with my kids and their arms got tired catching perch on the west end of Steamboat Bay. There's plenty of reeds and cover for fish. We even got several 2-3lb Pike on black Rapalas and nabbed a 5 lb walleye on a minnow and bobber.

FISHED LEECH ON SATURDAY 3-24, SUNNY SUNNY WARM WEATHER. TALKED TO LOCAL BAIT SHOPS, ETC, AND ACCESS TO LAKE IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, AS FAR AS CROSSING PRESSURE RIDGES,WHICH ENCOMPASS THE LAKE ALMOST COMPLETELY? ON SATURDAY, A GUY DROVE HIS ATV, AND ENDOWED UP, HE GOT HIS LEGS WET, AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE ATV OUT, WHICH WAS SITTING VERTICLE IN THE WATER? THEY ENDED UP USING PLANKS, BUT THE PRESSURE RIDGE ICE AND ALLOT OF WATER. GETTING OUT TO THE MAIN PART OF THE LAKE, IS NOT REALLY A OPTION? MOST OF THE FISHERMAN WERE GOING OUT ON THE BEACH JUST BEFORE STONEY POINT, AND WERE EITHER DRIVING OR ATVING IT. ICE IS FULL OF CRACKS, SOFT SPOTS, AND HONEYCOMB POROUSITY, AROUND 3 FT THICK? WHEN I WENT OUT ON SATURDAY, THE BEACH SEEMED SOME WHAT SAFE, BUT WITH THE WARM WEATHER WHO IS TO SAY. BE CAREFUL, DRIVE SLOW WITH WINDOWS DOWN. I TALKED TO 6 FISHERMAN AND THEY SAID FISHING WAS SPOTTY, MOSTLY IN THE MORNING. THE GROUP THAT WENT OUT OVER THE PRESSURE RIDGE, SIZE OF 12 GUYS, CAUGHT 21, AND SOME WHITEFISH. FROM WHAT THE LOCALS ARE SAYING THEY TURNED OFF FROM THE WEEK PRIOR? THE TULIBEE THAT WAS OPENED FOUND THAT THEY ARE NOT THAT FULL OF LARVAE? SO THE REAL START OF FISHING HAS NOT REALLY STARTED. A BUCKET FULL OF FISH IS NOT REALLY THAT MANY, CONSIDERING THAT THESE FISH ARE PRETTY GOOD SIZED! LAST YEAR, THE FISHING AT THIS TIME, WAS VERY GOOD! IN SUMMATION, GETTING OVER THE PRESSURE RIDGE IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND UNADVICEABLE! THEY WERE FISHING TO THE SOUTH OF THE BEACH IN AROUND 30-35 FT OF WATER. SOME SAY THIS AREA IN THE PAST WAS GOOD, OTHERS HAVE SAID SO SO. I SUPPOSE IT IS A MATTER OF CATCHING THEM WHEN THEY ARE SCHOOLED UP. IF YOU GO OUT ON THE ICE, BE THERE, FROM 6-7:30, IN THE MORNING. WATCH FOR ANGLERS WITH FISH ON THE ICE, AND THAT IS YOUR FIRST INDICATION OF WHO TO TALK TO?

AS OF TODAYS DATE, 3-20 1ST DAY OF SPRING, I HEARD THAT TULLIBEES WERE TENATIVE, THE SHRIMP ARE ON THE BOTTOM. APPARENTLY ACCESS IS LIMITED? HOWEVER, THIS LAKE IS FULL OF TULLIBEE. JUST MORE OR LESS WAITING FOR THEM TO SCHOOL UP. I WOULD SAY 25-30 FT OF WATER IS FINE, AS LONG AS OVER MUD, NOT SAND. LAST YEAR THEY LIKED A DROP LINE WITH A ORANGE OR RED JIG, AND IT HELPED TO HAVE A SPRING FLAT METAL TIP AND JUST STRAIGHT LINE IT, AND USE A BOBBER ON THE OTHER HOLE, TO INCREASE HOOK SETS. APPARENTLY THE BITE IS IN THE MORNING.

Darrin from New Brighton, sounds like you know Leech pretty good. A couple buddies and I want to stay in MN this fall for our annual week-long fishing trip and are thinking of hitting Leech. Do you (or anyone else on this board that knows Leech good) have any suggestions on where to stay and where to start fishing it? We're not picky about what gamefish we chase but order of preference is probably bass, pike then eyes. Thanks!

i was reading the reports on winnie, and they said that the perch are eating mayflies, was wondering if the tullibees on leech are starting to be caught, or if the shrimps are not hatched yet. went up there last year, and a whole group of fisherman moved and found them, was a nice time. I still have some smoked from last winter, very good. I suspect the season for these silver darts, will be starting in the next two weeks. keep posting fishing experiences on these tullibees, would be interested to know whats going on. i had a friend go up to red on 22nd and got his limit, 7 miles out of hillman. 12 ft? of water. we are headed up to winnie this weekend for a day. it looks like they might be biting? one does not know until you get a line down the hole. especially reading these comments, it seems you do have to keep moving, and drilling, and goya, get off your butt. as in all th ings. one cannot beat fun for having a good time.

With walleye fishing over it's time to think jumbo yellow perch and tullibee (Cisco). Both have been alittle slow but with good company the day is always enjoyable. Best luck so far has been out from stony point and two points. Be careful and remember to always tell somebody where your going. Good luck fishing.

Heard the "pout" festival was on.....drove up for a look and chance to catch some. Never fished the lake before, spent time looking for 10-12 ft of h2o. Hard to find. Found lots of deep water, beautiful ice... Caught 2 walleyes around 5:30pm. About 20 machines went by and ended the bite. Had fun. Will be back next yr. Plan on staying a couple of days....with a depth map of lake!!!

finn,

there is enough ice to drive vehicles, but it is never guaranteed safe. the way i look at it, if you own a snowmobile or atv, why risk driving truck on the ice? yes, the ride out is colder, but beats what could happen. i was on lake of the woods last winter, 38 inches of ice, and found a weak spot and dropped my front end through, took a bit of work to get it back out. i went out and bought an atv, just not worth the risk. good luck fishing.

tpeter,

they are driving on the ice, but i wouldn't suggest it. atv is the best bet. there is about 14 inches on walker bay, but only in spots, there was a truck that went through last weekend, and now with this warm weather, who knows.

Are there any vehicles out on the ice? I've heard ice is very thin for this time of year. What do the Muskies hit best on? Mexican Bride thinks I'm crazy but here I come! Bob

No reports on the Ice Fishing? It's pretty good down here in the Southern State of Iowa 4-5 inches of ice. We don't have the perch you have. although they seem to be making a comeback.

Well my cabin is on Leech and i have to say the fishing has been very good at least for me! my neighbor caught and released a 56 inch muskie in the Agency Narrows. I my self have found myself catching a few decent sized small mouths off of our dock! and of course the walleyes have been wonderful as always!

I went to horse shoe bay on leech lake for 8 days fished 12 hours a day bobber & trolling not even a bite the whole time so if you go to leech lake go to the resort on sucker bay. because horse shoe bay lodge is very bad.
