Hi Cookie, Just wanted to let you know we went out and had a great time. Never found Darin good thing cuz they didn't do so well. We stopped and tried one place caught a few perch, no crappies. Moved 200 yds. and we were right on top of them. We got our limit in half hour. Continued CPR until the rain drove us out. Best fishing I've ever had on Red. It was getting late so we decided not to stop in and visit.Went to LOL in the morning and never wet a line, The wind was terrible along with access conditions. Good luck with the 14" Kelly. Later

Paul from the Cities,

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully it doesn't get too warm and we get the chance for some of the end of the year slabs.

By the way this is definitely one of the better report sites I've ever enjoyed reading and visiting. Pretty much good honest advice and reports from all. Cookie you especially are to be thanked for your efforts to always reply to every question and always with good info.

Thanks to all, JohnB

WENT OUT ON LAKE THRU HILLMANS ON 3-22 SATURDAY. CONDITIONS TO LAKE WERE SEMI DEEP RUTS, LEADING TO WATER/SLUSHY CONDITIONS FOR 150 YARDS? AND THEN TO BRIDGE. THE WEATHER OVER THE WEEKEND WAS EXTREMELY NICE!!! ICE ON REMAINING PART OF LAKE WAS RIGHT UP TO AUGER, SO EXTENSIONS MAKES DRILLING MULTIPLE HOLES ALLOT EASIER. THE LAKE ON SATURDAY LOOKED LIKE A CITY. THE OTHER ACCESS'S WERE NOT ALLOWING FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRUCKS OUT. FISHING WAS TREMENDOUS! WHO IS TO SAY WHERE THEY ARE ONE DAY FROM NEXT, BUT YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO MOVE. GETTING OFF THE LAKE WAS A BIT OF FOUR WHEELING BUT FUN ALL THE SAME, NOT TOO MUCH OF A PROBLEM, BUT I WOULD SAY THAT YOU SHOULD CALL HILLMANS TO CHECK IF THEY ARE ALLOWING TRUCKS, I KNOW ROGERS WAS, AT YOUR OWN RISK, HE SAID SOME SOFT SPOTS. WHEN YOU DRILL A HOLE 3/4 WAY DOWN, WATER RUN OFF FILLS THE HOLE. SO IT IS HONEYCOMBED, BUT THICK.

Fished 3.5 miles out of Hillman's on Friday and did very well, Thanks to the advice of people on this site. Saturday we drove out of the south side because the access was in much better shape and only got 3. Oh well, should have listened to Cookie.

We stayed the weekend at West Wind in our sleeper shack on shore. I would not recommend this resort to anyone going to URL ! Very overpriced, very rude and unwelcoming staff. They made us feel as if we were trespassing from the moment we got there, with the exception to the guys at the baitshop who were genuinely nice and helpful. Thanks to everyone on this site for all the info.

JohnB you should have no problem getting out this weekend if you have wheelers.Have not seen a weather report but if it were to get cold over the weekend and tighten up the acsess possible that 4x4 trucks may still get through.

Was hoping to get out during spring break March 29 thru April 5 and was wondering if that will be possible. Have a group of 4 and all will bring ATV's.

Any replies/advice is appreciated.

Thanks, JohnB

Ended up fishing out of Rogers this weekend. The access was a little bumpy for the first 1/4 mile but after that it was in terrific condition. Large group to the west and a smaller one to the east. We ended up splitting the difference. Beautiful weather and the fish were biting from the get-go. What a way to end the season. If the temps stay the way they were though ATVs may be the only way to even think about getting out there. Our group of 7 guys filled out and were off the lake before 6PM. Before we left some others came out and were catching fish as we were leaving. So I would assume that they just keep on biting for them as well. the largest fish that I caught this weekend was 1lb. 9ozs., most were in that 1lb. 1/4ozs range though. Just one more cold front would be nice.

Well, took our last trip for the season to URL this last weekend (3-22, 23)- Lots of fun but few fish. 4 crappies, 6 people all weekend. We were out a bit further than most, 5.1 miles out, so that may have affected action. Had my mini-van and trailer out there, and we worried all weekend about getting it off the lake. We had a 4x4 in the group and he ended up towing us through the final muck and mud on Hillman's. Small walleye were the fish of the weekend, but they were fun to CPR. Was amazed at the amount of garbage left on the lake by un-caring anglers. Beautiful weekend to be there, though. Thanks to all the people who post info here. It has been a great help!!!

The wife Kellie and I made are last trip on the ice last night,I will not be driving on the lake with truck again untell next season Went out with Scott,Bob,and Scott yesterday morning to find Mike as he went out late the night before. Found him with Telly,Todd,Mike and Dave. A lot of parting this weekend hard to use common sense when your all liqured up. Glad to see Mike was OK, Telly and the boys went home with only 12 fish if they had a fish for every beer they drank they would have caught 240 fish in 3 nights. They said they had a good time and any fish was a bonus. Went out 6.5 miles with Mike and Scott to the area they caught 46 fish the night before, dropped a line and started catching fish right away 2 over 14 inches 6 total, they ended up getting 14 more to finish there limits and came in. We went to same area last night and not 1 bite, must of been a day spot as no fish were taken there after dark in 2 nights. Had a huge fish fry last night a fitting end to the ice fishing season, not sure if I will be on the ice again as it is getting dicy out there, sounded like some were having trouble along the shorline last night after dark, so would assume no more trucks will be going out. Not sure about atvs will know later today. Sure met alot of nice people this year and made some new friends, hope to see some this spring and summer and again next winter. Kellie never landed that big crappie but would think this spring or next winter she will, she is determend to get that wall mounter and is putting the time in to get it. I personly let many fish over 14 inches go in the last 2 years so they are out there. Saw a fish just shy of 2 lbs. at westwind saturday night. Wow what a fish. , I would like to thank Pete for all his help this year and thank all the fishermen that stayed here for respecting are place here. Look forward to seeing you all in the future. Myself and NorthStar(copyright pending Fargo approval) met the Fargo Masteranglers Sat afternoon west from Hillmans. Very sloppy getting on and to your spot. Northstar boated the first slab about 6:40 and Team GrandForks took a hugh lead over Fargo. By 8pm I wasn't 100% and had to bench myself to a warmer area and NorthStar had to fish one against two. By about 9:30 Team Fargo had 22 Crappies while Team GF only boated 12. Watching people leaving the ice at night is like watching the release of a 1,000 chickens at the same time. A rig pulling a trailer got stuck coming out of Hillman's and slowed things down for a bit. Ice is think but honeycombed.

got hung up at Hillmans and slowed things down. Ice was think but very honeycombed

Crappie thanks for pointin out the obvious, checking with the access owners. Called four of them today, talked to each not just about the access but also the lake itself further out. They go out not just to fish and see how others are doing for a where to go and numbers report (got that too) but they are checking the ice itself. We went with the one who gave me the best sounding one and it was really smooth driving and the fishing was good too, the kids especially loved it, always want to extra careful with kids.

Me and the little lady fished all day Friday (15 hrs total). Started out just under 4 miles out of Hillman's. Lot's of Perch and a hand full of Crappies during the day. When 7:30 pm rolled around, we hadn't caught anything in a while and heard everybody elses augers fire up so guessed others weren't doing well either. Pulled stakes and moved West about 1 mile. Dropped a couple of holes and had two right away. Only had 1 more in the next 45 min, so we picked up again and went out about another 1/2 mile or so and then got into them good. Pulled the last one thru the ice at about 1:00 am when we had everything but 1 pole packed in the truck.. Move till you find them, you gotta put the time in, it can't be easy everytime...

Till next year!

Crappie Fool, thanks for your post, that made sense when you mentioned the traffic making a difference also. And for mentioning it was the lake itself not just the accesses. Took your advice and talked to the access owners and they were a bundle of info, and talked like you did about the middle of the lake, not just the landings and the honeycombing. Wish I would've done that last week, had heard that the ice was thick, etc. but no one said that one of the accesses has been four wheelers only for four days, fortunately there are six other accesses. Best & SAFEST advice is like Crappie posted, talk to the access owners, they know their roads and the ice on them (not just the landings) and they have experience, with many of them working it all their lives so they know how it goes.

THe Good the bad the ugly. The good the temps 27 degrees and no wind,The bad no cloud cover and temps predicted above 50, the ugly the lake accesses. Tonight could get real ugly will be checking accesses a little later, all the traffic is wiping them out. I would think wheelers will be the ticket. COOKIE

BEFORE heading out check with the Access Owners for their restrictions. There is a difference on the ice (the lake itself, not just the landings) from this morning to this evening, honeycombing happening. Some access are thinking atv's only tomorrow..no problem getting out but with 50 degree plus day & if traffic on the ice is like today the problem may be coming in so they're trying to plan for no problems coming in. check with the access owners directly, they work it and are experienced with how the ice goes at the end of the season

What a beautiful night on the lake 36 degrees and no wind.Kellie and I went out and checked on are guys. Todd,Telly , and Dave only have 7 crappies so there not doing to well, looks like there having fun though. Some guys set up within 10 feet of them and they were not to happy about that. Found Darrin, Les, Mellisa,Dan and the other guys. Dan had 14. Darrin and Mellisa only had 3 but they will stay out late. My theory paid off big time for Mitch ,Jerry and Scott they are in the cabin and filled out plus released many fish. The raod was pretty rough coming in the last 1/4 mile very bumpy ,but we did make it in and there were vechicles going out. COOKIE

Sounds like 4 wheel drive pickups are still ok to drive onto the ice? Are auger extension still needed?

Just came off the lake, used Hillmens acces little muddy, saw a full size chevy van pulling a small trailor so he made it through the mud, plenty of ice a little bumpy the first mile, also saw a carvan cross the bridge. Todd and the guys only got 5 fish but pulled in around midnight. The bridge seems fine at this time a little standing water but not bad. Talked to Hudecs they are recommending 4 wheel drives ,Same thing a little bumpy but plenty of ice. The temp is 36 in waskish and cloudy, a north wind making it a little brisk on the lake. COOKIE
