went up to url this past weekend 2/14 2/15. i started making plans with inlaws & outlaws a year ago, we ended up with 14 of us. i made a reservation in mid dec. and have been reading this site everyday.thank you for all your helpful tips ,(stay away from the crowds, move to find fish, glow red & green ect.) well long story short.we hammered em! 11 fish short of 14 limits (199 fish, make that buitiful slaps).in two days of fishing out of west winds during the day 2-6.pm. i moved my shack twice to find fish, started catching fish while cleaning the slush out of my hole.we were busy till about 5 o clock, then my brother in law & nephew in there shacks started getting fish till 6:30,they were 25 ft. on ether side of me.we went back the next day and the same thing happend, some of the guys in the group only cought 6 or 8 fish but they never moved there shacks, we cought em on glow red fat frys&green &white demons. i think the fishing gods were looking down on us,we will be HOOKED for life. thanks again for the up dates. cookie. p.s. if you went out of w.w. 4&1/2 mi.you went too far.

Hey fishing master. If red lake is old news how come you still hear about the 80 fish a day bite and the very likely overf 14 inch crappie. The lake is anything but fished out. You must be one of the ones who doesnt want to get up and move to find the fish like most. If you want fish you have to go to them, they dont come to you. Lake of the Woods is a tremendous fishery but as of now, i bet 60 or more of those 100 walleye and sauger were between 5 to 10 inches. when that year class grows up, then its time for lake of the woods and to steady off of red. You cant fish a lake that size out of crappie when the natives dont net them or keep them. As I've said before, you can only fish such a small part of red and if the crappies are there, they're every where else as well. Low must be filled too. So, instead of being ignorant, try what the locals tell you and if that doesnt work, get up and move!

Mandy I have tried to email and never goes through? Ski that was Pete, super guy, and knows the lake like the back of his hand. Still fishing out of Hillmems,as that is where the house is. A word of advice do not attemt to cut accross from 1 plowed road to the other, I have seen numerous 4 wheel drives make it 3/4 of the way and then there done. The only way out of the drift is back the way you came with a tow, there is water under those plowed drifts and you are asking for trouble if you attemp it cross them. Just watched 2 guys plow in and gave them a ride to westwind for help. Not a good thing, makes for a rough day. Use common sense. The lake is a winter wonderland with the blowing snow. Looks like I might get a plow will know this weekend, Well back to fishing report I can tell you where they wern't biting last night. My shack not good ,small house pretty good not 75 yards from me,it seems that if you set up on the outside of groups you have better luck, if your not catching fish move. They could be 20 yards away it doesn't make any sense, if you want crappies you have to find them no way around it, soft bottom seems way better then hard bottom. If you plan on staying on 1 spot its pure luck. You have to look for the fish by fishing for them or having your buddys find them then take there spot when they leave. I tell all my guys to drill extra holes befor dark then check them with vex and minnow, if there there they come from the bottom. We did well last year on the cribbs. again first night none ,second night all fish were released to many to count and all released ,we were with a friend that does not keep fish if he wants fish he said he goes to the store. Seems we were rewarded that night as it was unreal. Gotta go will be checking on Brian and his dad Paul. COOKIE

Have been up there the past four years and have had good luck every time. Going up again March 7-9. Have fished everywhere on Upper Red and the best luck seems to be between Rogers and Benzomatic. Go towards shore from the big groups quite a way, probably about 300-400 yards. You should be in about 13-14 feet. Use the biggest crappie minnows you can find on any glow jig and use heavy gear. A medium rod with 6-8 pound test works the best to get them up the hole fast. Fish should bite steady from 5:30 until about 7:30. Good Luck

Forget Red Lake That is old news that Lake is to fished out, with everyone keeping there limits and more over the last 5 years, head up to lake of the woods, I was up there last weekend and caught over 100 walleye/sauger in one day, and 6 of them were over 27 inches. It was an unbelievable bite, I was using 3 inch shiners in 30 feet of water

Well its been a long but fun weekend,Crazy Bill,Stu, Phil went home sunday morning with 43 fish. Crazy Bills buddies showed up saturday nite ,they had the music blasting, they were singing and pounding the fish ,while Crazy Bill was 10 feet away and couldn't catch those last 2 fish. Hard to understand? Were they cutting the fish off from getting to Bill. Jerry the coney king went home with 60 fish for his group of 4. Rick and Bill caught 30 fish with 3 that were close to 15 inches, I put my house on that spot today and would think we will do good there.Set a couple up buy my other house and they caught 30 fish between 3:30 and 5:00pm. befor dark? The greek had a rough birthday sat. and only had 2 fish he decided to stay tonight and was closing in on there 30. Mike and his family got 41 fish and lost a portable from the wind saturday night. They found it 5 miles away. Well now the sad news all those fish we let go friday told there pals as Wayne the wife and I have only caught 1 fish since friday nite? We moved house today and were surrouned by fishemen tonight.they were all getting fish, all we were getting were lookers, must be the big smart ones. Saw toomanywalleyeguy they only had 5 fish? The greek had Sharon and Lance fishing with them and I think they will be close to there 30 by morning. Brian and his dad will be here tomorrow and will be fishing hard for 2 days and nights. Was up at red lake Feb 15 16 17,the bite was pretty slow and short. We were out 5.4 miles from pressure ridge out of Hillmans north of road 5/8 of a mile. Caught most of crappies from 5:30 to 6:45 pm with stragglers showing up afterwords (2 or 3).Caught several in the AM (2 OR 3) nothing to get to excited about. Friday nite our fising camp had the ice auger stolen. This was discovered saturday AM early. One thing nice about winter and snow is that it leaves tracks wich do not go away. The auger was drilled into the ice about 10 feet from the fish house door where it was discovered a set of foot prints wich led to a set of vehicle tracks. These tracks came from a couple of young fellers who the nite before were drilling with a hand auger about 100 yards from us. Remembering what type of vehicle they were driving the tracks led away from the area for about 1/2 mile where low & behold there was the same rig , the owner of the auger walked up to the pickup and found his auger in the box next to another one.He asked one of guys where they got the augers from, they did not come up with an answer so he called 911 got the sheriff on his cell phone seeing this one of them sang like a canary. He went on to explain that they lifted the other auger from the party next to us . Finding this out the owner told the kid to un hook the trailer he was towing and we are going to return the other auger ,he did. The sheriff asked if the situation was under controll at that point it was. The owner of the second auger was very happy to get his auger back not so happy with the boys though. That full moon this weekend was making weird things happen cya by......

Went up on saturday. Fished from 11:30 to 8:30 about 4 miles out from hillmans. I caught 9 and my buddy caught nothing but perch in the holes 2 feet away from mine. Minnows on a glow hook worked just as well as a red glow jig tipped with a minnow. We caught most of the fish during the day and it was very slow. Fishing was tough. Hope it picks up soon.

Spent Saturday 2/15 on Upper Red. We went about 4.2 miles out of westwind and set up away from the crowds. We started fishing about 11:30 and caught alot of 1 1/2 to 2 lbs walleyes, that went back, our first crappies didn't start until late afternoon. They were nice size ones but the bite was pretty lite. We took home 6. The walleyes are sure looking good, wish we could have kept them. We fished until 8 pm and decided we had enough.

fished on the 15th, wife and I. Fished 4 miles out on the republican side, wife wanted to stay independent and fish the middle of the road but I had to explain to her how deep we would have to drill to find productive water and the democratic side had been kind of weak lately. So..we went right. Fish started hitting around 430 and kept it up until 730. Left with 10, missed and lost many more. It gets interesting working 13-14 inch fish through LOTS of ice. thanks for the interesting website.

Cookie: Was great to hear your personal story about your Grandmother, now I know where you values come from and why you are such a nice guy!! The road out of Hillmans was great, no pressure ridge at all!! We fished north of the pine tree on the left, in the same area as before. Fishing wasn't good but that is fishing!! We caught a bunch of small perch that we threw back and two nice walleyes that also went back in the lake. I talked with other people in that area and no one caught any. It was still a great day to be fishing, I was able to spend the day with my son and we were able to catch up with each others lives once again since he is in college, I don't get to see him very often any more. I just wish he could have met you, so he could have seen who I am talking about when I mention your name. Hopefully we can get up there one more time this winter and catch some slabs!! Harry

I do not go by gps cordinances as there is no structure on the lake? I do go by landmarks and milage. We move around and try different areas, when we find fish thats where we set up. I have people that come here and try different areas if they do good I make mental notes of those spots. Some of the people I have had here are inconsiderate and I try and weed them out as I don't need the headaches. Please respect the lake and pick up your garbage, field stip your smokes, the butts do not belong on the ice the lake is not a ashtray.I hate liter and always pick up my share of other people trash. I have a butt can outside of my fishouse. It is there for a reason.IF we respect others we can all enjoy the lake. Will try and give detailed report tonight or tomorrow. Have a nice day COOKIE

While I have not fished on Red yet this year (we are going up in March), I have fished it the last 3. My experience has been similar to the rumors about a nonexistant crappie bite during the day. Out of over 100 crappies that we have taken, only 2 came during the middle of the day. We have learned to concentrate on crappies during the late afternoon and evening hours. We spend the majority of the daytime hours fishing for big northerns which can really be a blast. If we are ambitious, we fish on Lake of the Woods early in the day for walleyes and fish for crappies later. LOW is about an hour farther north. Otherwise, we spend the majority of the day recovering from the night before.

Glow red has been consistant all year for us. Thursday killed them on waxies, Friday the bite was lghter and they preferred minnows. The first crappie Wayne caught was all of 14 inches and he released it, we ended up with 25 and released 10 to 15 fish. Tim and Tammy caught 16, wild Bill,Phil and Stu caught 32 crappies they spread out Stu got 6, phil got 6 and Bill got 20. Bill had a good spot. Stu and Phil got 6 of theres out of Bills house. Will be heading to West wind to clean them a little later. The bite started about 5:30pm and lasted untell 8:30. JIm got his biggest one at 2:00am. Wayne caught the smallest one i've seen all year 7 inches. Cute little guy we let him go that was 8:30 am. We only caught 3 after sunrise but I was able to watch the sun come up which I always enjoy. Lady likes to fish you must be wise, look for stable weather. Have to go got company now and will be heading out on lake for coney dogs Ummm coney dogs. COOKIE
