Cookie do you know who has orange crappie minnows? I keep hearing people say going 4 miles out from the public landing is the right area? I'm also looking for some good eating places? I know I full of questions. But this is my first trip and I'm looking for some quality fishing. any info will be rewarded thanks again.

Have a trip to URL planned for MArch 29th through April 4. Staying at a friends palce in Talmoon MN. Bringing 4 wheelers and portables. For three of us this will be our first URL trip. Looking for some general advice on ice conditions, suggested places to get on the ice, good place to stop for sandwich and a beer, the usual stuff.

If anyone is out in the Talmoom area, be sure to stop by Hayslips Saloon and say Hi to Rick and Dave. Great guys with a unique place.

THanks for any help.

Talked to employee at west wind ,sound like they did well last night. Talked to hillmen's and Kenny came in with a limit earlier today so it all boils down to being at the right spot at the right time. Did not talk to Hudecs but has always been good this time of year. Good luck to all ,be safe use common sense and please pick up all trash even a little extra would be very helpful COOKIE

What a change in temperature from this week compared to last. The weather man predicts 55 degrees for today. Last week the high was -5 degrees and the low was -21 degrees. Can someone say warming trend? With all the nice weather, the Brainerd Lakes are alive with ice fishermen. This is my favorite time to ice fish. I just love fishing outside on the ice. The sunfish action continues to be strong in the Brainerd Area. Round, North Long, Upper Cullen, and Lower Cullen Lakes have all been putting out their share of nice bluegills. The key locations continue to be in 8- 12 feet of water on the backside of good weed beds. Euro Larva and wax worms on small tear drop jigs have been working well. The crappie fishing remained strong as well. There has been many pound to pound and a quarter crappies being caught on Round and Gull lake. Gladstone, Upper Cullen Upper Gull, and Hubert are still producing numbers of crappie, but the size has not been a large. Small minnows on light jigs have been producing the most fish. Key locations have been deeper water areas next to fast breaks. The water depths have varied from 30-45 feet.

Make sure you bring a extension for your ice auger! There's still 40-45 inches of ice on many of the lakes. Take care until next week!

MItch, the bite was a little slow in are area last night, there is a pressure ridge on the lake, try and stay away from that. The schools seem to be spresd out more this year so if you can find a area that no one has fished you could hit the mother load. In between West winds road and Hillmens road is unchartered water/ice. You just need to take your time and watch where your driving. We have been catching crappies in 11.4" of water on a hard bottom? We have not hit the mother load but have had some action. Curt and Ryan got 11 last night, Bruse and Cheryl only got 1 in my house last night, hope they did a little better on the morning bite. Will be checking them later. Randy,Wade and Jim got 5 on the morning bite yesterday. COOKIE

The last week-end of February I was fishing in the bay of Isle and I caught only 10-15 all day Sunday after the temps dropped. I was in 15ft and the bottom was clear with a couple of 8" to 9" caught. I'm going again this week-end and am looking for more spots. Where is stocky's harbor?? Thanks

Cookie, Will be in a sleeper out of Hillman's Friday night into Saturday. If you're in the area and see a Hillman house with a black Chevy Silverado w/graphics parked next to it, stop in and say hi. Will have plenty of venison saugage to sample. Good luck to all this weekend, looks like the weather will be perfect for getting those crappies in the mood.

Talked to Bruce and his wife they ended up gatting 16 with her catching 12 to Bruce's 4. They will be using my house tonight as they stayed in the cabin last night. Randy his brother Tom and Wade also got 16 so not to bad all but 1 being over 13 inches. Talked to Buddy a few limits way out but do not know the exact location. Drove way out today. To bad you Can't go South of Hillmen's road as there is a vast area out there that has not been fished all year. Cusin is coming today maybe can talk him into finding a route out there and giving it a shot. Well got to go and prep fish house for Bruce and his wife . Fill the candy dish, vacum, wipe everthing down, and drop off the daily paper. COOKIE

Jim,

My first choice is a gold and chartreuse swedish pimple. My second is the buck shot rattle spoon. I prefer using just the heads on the end of the spoons and a shiner on my dead stick. Hope this helps. I will be fishing Pine Island area this weekend and am looking forward to the warm weather. Good luck

hey cookie, was up on friday and saturday, went out of westwind, about 4 miles out. 1st time out of there, quite impressed with the place. our group had a pretty good bite, as there were not many around us. The fish were really aggressive hitting on red and blue glow jigs. saturday the bite seemed to be better during the day, one group of guys fishing about 20yds away had 45 of em by 6pm on saturday. need to use small minnows, fish do not seem to bite as aggressively on larger minnows.

Holland Lake

Crappies have been hitting 1/64oz orange glow jigs tipped with a crappie minnow, between 3pm and 6:30, all winter long. Recently, action has slowed to just 5 or 6 fish per outing, down from 10 or 15 fish per outing. Best action is in 30 feet, fish suspending about 4-10ft off the bottom. On average, 1 fish in 10 is worth keeping. (I guess it all depends on how good you are with a filet knife or what your goals are in terms of filling up your freezer) If you don't have a color flasher, you'll be disappointed on this lake.
