Wazman, looked like they had houses out to the mouth of the bay also, possibly farther but didn't drive out to check. Last year they put us about 1/2 mile out of the bay and we caught keeper northern and released walleye. Northern were smaller, 2-3 pound range. It was too cold to venture out to try other spots so the fish had to come to me. Good luck if your're going up.

Just got home from a trip out to Long Point Resort. Many nice fish. 3 over 19" and all were put back. Caught around 40 fish between 3 guys and kept 20. Fish are out in the deep waters there, its worth the time to stay out there.

No sweat, Dave. It's all about having fun and helping a local charity, but winning a prize would be nice! I've caught fish the past 2 years in a row, but never made the top 150, so I'm hoping to break the spell this year. Stay warm and enjoy - there's some really great people out there.

last night i had 2 guys set up I gave them the oppertunitey to try 3 different houses. They were content to stay in the 1 house even though they had access to 21 other holes. I told them to take there vexlars and just check the other holes and they might be able to pick up a few fish since my sleeper house was slow.I guess there happy just to be fishing in such comfort. They did not want to do any leg work . oh well cookie

To Joe from Andrews: Most fish houses are pretty warm, have not rented from Eddy's before though. Others I have been in I've sometimes opened the door to bleed some heat off. I recommend a sleeping bag to sleep on top of since a lot of houses have a foam pad instead of matress. Just bring your tackle, a skimmer to keep the holes clean, and your bait bucket. I use a 'quiet bubbles' aerator (about $15) to keep the bait alive. Bought mine at Fleet Farm. It runs nonstop on 2 D-cell batteries for several days easy and is much quieter than the cheaper ones. Also, bring along some long 'fireplace' matches or one of the grill lighters since they are very handy for lighting stoves and propane lights. Hope you have good luck. Cold front killed my fishing trip.

DOGHUNTER:

The landing where you pay, they will tell you where the cribs are, but I would not bet my life on them. The crappies schools move, the cribs do not. Last year we were fishing 200 yards past the cribs out of Benz-o-matic. Just ask the owner and they'll tell you. Good luck!

Most of you are correct in saying that there is no magic spot and there is no guarantee that you are going to limit out either. you can go out of pretty much any landing and with some luck you will find crappies.

The bite is inconsistent right now for good reason. It will get better but that does not mean paydirt everytime and that is not the intent. I have fished upper Red for crappies for the last 4 years and have had many good days and some bad ones. It's all in the sport. Sounds like soe people may be dissapointed if they don't hammer 15 slabs in an hour. Let mother nature and some good luck take care of you!

Try not to have too many expectations when you plan your next trip. Listen to the locals who are posting here because they know what they are talking about. Cookie is the best reference we got on this site because he literally lives on top of upper Red.

Yes you can drive full size trucks out now. And there are websites to find house rentals up there. Unfortunately we cannot post them here. Get on the web and be creative. Good luck if you go to Red, but don't expect limits everytime. Peace!

We went to Red Lake 1-10 through 1-12. We went out of Hillman's about three and a half and five and a half miles. We had six people and we cought one limit in two nights.(crappies only). We also cought five or six nice notherns. The bite was slow I would expect a weather change and a little bit of time for the action to pick up. Good Luck! c-ya bye

Why was my complaint about a resort "snipped" but nobody else's has? I heard a report of a huge musky caught on West Battle, can anyone confirm that? Caught some nice crappies on Holland lake in Eagan, anyone ever trout fished there? I caught some eater 'eyes 2 weeks ago on West battle in 32 feet, has anyone else been fishing that deep? Thanks for any help.

Last week's cold snap has made all the lakes in the Brainerd Area safe for driving. The only exception is the Black Hole on 371 Bay of North Long Lake. For some reason there's a big stretch of lake that just doesn't seem to want to freeze over. It's been the talk of the town. Everything from space junk falling from the sky, to the earth cracking below the lake. It sure has been fun reading all the theories in the letters to the Editor this last week. All I know is that with the exception of the Black Hole, you can drive anyplace you want to with a truck right now. The crappie bit has slowed with the below zero nights that we've been having this last week. The best bets are still Upper Cullen, Gladstone, North Long, Gull, Upper Gull, and Lake Hubert. The bulk of the fish are still suspended near shore points, located close to deep water. They're just not as active as before. Smaller baits with wax worms have been producing better than larger jigs with minnows.

The walleye action has also slowed in the Brainerd Lakes Area this last week. Gull, North Long, Pelican and Lake Edwards are still producing, but the size has fallen off from the previous weeks. Getting away from the crowds has still been a key. Most of the fish taken this last week were caught in deeper water. With 32 to 45 feet of water being the most productive depth. The deep water Islands and saddle areas have been producing the most fish. A shiner minnow on a tip-up has been a tough combination to beat. The Jaycee's Ice tourney is coming this weekend on the 18th. Support a good cause and have a great day in the process!! I hope to see you out there. I'll be fishing on the North End of Polk's Flat in 35-50 feet of water. (along with 10 thousand other guys!!) Take care until next week!!

Was in Isle Bay Monday/Tuesday this week. Fishing was very slow, flasher would show fish but they kept their mouths clamped shut. Another rental close to me had a camera and was seeing fish but not hooking them. Seen some negative comments about resorts which I can attest to also but went out of Scenic Bay this year again and have had very good service. Booked again for next month. Was directly in the bay this time but others farther out were not having any better luck. The only action was on sucker minnows for northern. Small perch were 'somewhat' interested in jig/minnow jig/waxie combos but mostly had non-aggressive taps. Hopefully will have better results next month. Also, fyi, the ice is fine on that end of the lake. Cold front may have killed fishing but made more ice.

This stance that everyone is looking for an easy bite on ORL is insane. This lake is huge and pretty much the same depth throughout. Do what the pro's do and drill holes until you find them. Vexilar's and Aquaviews are great tools for finding the slabs everyone wants. If you find them today out of Waskish, you may not find them in the same location the next.

Good luck!

I hate to see all of the whinning on this site. Even more so I hate the fact that you pulled me into it. I disagree with you Geno22. This site was created for people to come on here and find out information about a lake...and where the fish are biting. Other people want to enjoy the lake also. Let people talk...they have every right to ask questions so that when they travel hours to get to the lake, they can catch a few fish and enjoy their trip.

adam and rob, for south shore fishing, i suggest zippel bay resort, there is excellent fishing for walleye/sauger or northern pike close by. there is also some good burbot action. i think early is better for walleyes, but i find end of february or march for the big pike, as they start to move shallow to ready for the spawn. as far as sleeper houses go, i have only rented a six person sleeper at zippel, but it was 12x20, six bunks, 12 holes, kitchen table, cookstove, etc. very nice. not sure on the sizes of smaller ones, but plenty of room for 6 in the big one. check out www.zippelbay.com for prices, etc. good luck fishing.

Does anybody ever answer questions on this site or just ask them? Just wondering. Anyway, my question is...if a guy could go to L.O.W. ice fishing any time of the year (for the remainder of the year) when would be the best time and where would you go on the south shore? When is the best time to catch the big ones? Feb or March? In what depths? I hope to get some good insight but I'm always happy just reading peoples pointless comments as well. Please keep the fellow fisherman informed. Thanks.

I agree with walleye slayer - it's for fun - none of the resort owners are going to tell you that you will come home with fish. it's SLOW this year - work for them - not just sit around waiting for them to come in. i have a house on the same side as Mac's and Dickie's - don't know the operations, but feel that at Karpen's where my house is that they do there best to move their houses to wheere the fish may be. have been up ever weekend sence chirstmas and our luck has been varied - 3 small "throw back" perch and one 18" throw back walleye last weekend & i work morning and night for my fish.

PS - love to see what that $200 house would look like - comfortable i'm sure!

Logan,

The house we were in from McQuoids was very nice. We rented a 10 holler so there was plenty of room. They have a car type stereo, a TV, nice table/chairs and shelves setup. Was also very warm even for a southern fisherman new to the term "below". Overall I give the fish house an A+.

Hope that helps,

YES...YES...YES The bite on Mille Lacs is slow but, there is a bite. I fish out of the Northern end (Red Door Resort). last two weekends we caught about 8 Walleye and a couple small perch. The new slot on the lake will make it difficult to catch keepers but, the biggies are out there. The eyes seem to be hugging the bottom as most aren't even showing on the locater and have to be tempted into a bite. Work a swedish pimple right on the bottom with a half minnow at first. They have hit everything from medium shiners to crappie minnows. If you are headed to the Red Door, expect a most plessent personal experiance from management if nothing else. Nice people and nice houses. See you all on the lake. Good luck and remember....it's all in fun
