I'm looking to make a definitive definition for each of these terms:

Ice Fishing House
Ice Fishing Shelter
Ice Fishing Shanty

Which is which? And how are each distinguished from the others?

I'm going to leave this topic up for a couple of weeks while we decide what each term actually means. It seems there is no 'dictionary definition' for each of them, so consider this something like a 'man law' ('beer law') and you are all invited to the table to make this law.
Very Happy

I'll start:
An ice fishing HOUSE is more or less permenant. They can be moved, but only with a fair amount of work. The very word 'house' implies that the house has some amnenities of home- sleeping quarters and a kitchen and bathroom. The focus is on COMFORT.

(Cookie rents out ice fishing HOUSES, for example)

An ice fishing SHELTER is meant to be moved frequently. The focus is on easy mobility. It focuses LESS on comfort but HIGH on mobility.

An ice fishing SHANTY is....?

I would say that makes sense all though I have it down to 2 hours to unbank, move, drill holes and rebank, minus towing time, to move our houses. I would say a shanty has either one or no windows is dark and is heated by wood. A ice shelter would be a step up from a shanty and would or could be as nice as a ice house only a little smaller, and easier to tow.

Lets go back to the 40 s , on lake Mille Lacs , ice fishermen built extensive walls of snow blocks as wind breaks when they found fish on a bar, rockpile etc. There were few plowed roads at the time, so ice fishermen making early season trips to the lake built these " shelters " ! Following fisherman always looked for these snow walls from the roadway where they parked, loaded up sleds and then hiked several miles out to fish them first, then venturing farther out if they were not biting ! ( these early season spots also had the bottom littered with Zippo lighters fallen from shirt pockets, and still have SPUDs sticking up like porcupine quills that were lost because Uncle John didnt ensure "Junior had the wrist rope on" ) " Shanties "originated on wisconsins lake Winibago , they had high pointed roofs to accomidate the long spear used in Sturgeon spearing there, little old aunties with too much " Corbys Reserve" in their system pushed the name further. "Fish house " was used in the late 30 s to describe any structure draged out on the ice to fish from, "Spearhouse " changed to "Dark House" when the state started realizing the money involved in regulation ! If they would have regulated electronics at the time "Asian Milfoil" wouldnt be a problem, and the Boys from Brainerd would have to learn how to fish...Skim ice on ponds around Minnetonka...walleyes hitting trolled rapalas late afternoon spray island...we need ten below for a week to pull the big house out...I hope Jake has "tuned the Auger"...watch yer bobber...juice

This is how I have always thought of them.

Shelter - a portable either store bought or home made. Usually of canvas or a similar material but could also be made out of 2x2"s and plastic tarp.

Shanty - usually bigger than a portable - Definitely home-made and on skids. Not as big as a house and probably won't win any Parade of Homes contest. When I think of Shanty I think of the ones they had on Lake Rebecca near Delano where they filmed the ice-fishing portion of "Grumpy Old Men" part I. Usually a pot-bellied wood burning stove.

House - Bigger than the other two classifications and more elaborate. Can be home-made or store bought with more ammeneties like TV, Stove, maybe a microwave. Can be on wheels or skids but what sets it apart from the other two is looks and size.

FISH SHELTER
A place you would bring your clumsy fishing buddy, but not your wife.

FISH SHANTY
A place you would bring either your clumsy fishing buddy or your wife.

FISH HOUSE
A place you would bring your wife but not your clumsy fishing buddy.

I agree with Chomper. I think that definition is by far the best.

Ice Fishing House- something permanent-you can sleep in comfortably

Ice Fishing Shanty/Shack-what at one time was a ice fishing house, but hasn't been taken care of in some time

Ice Fishing Shelter- a suitcase style or flipover portable

That's the definitions I gave my son last year. Laughing

Having grown up in Michigan and lived for 10+ years in Minnesota, the difference is:
A Fish House is from Minnesota
An Ice Shanty is from Michigan

The way I see it a Fish House is a shelter thst has hard sides, is on skids or wheels, has a heater, bunks and area to cook-maybe evn a toilet.

A Shelter is one you flip over and can sit out of the wind and there is no floor

A Shanty is one that opens, has a floor with canvas sides maybe big enough for a cot.

I have a shelter and a shanty. Use the small one to move around and the big one when I find a spot.
