I'm looking to take an ice fiishing trip up to northern, MN sometime between mid December and mid January. I'm going to be going with my dad, uncle, and brother-in-law. We have all fished many of the major fisheries in N. MN, but we've always done it by boat. We are looking to use our own portable houses and stay ashore for the overnight hours. My question is: what area would be suitable for a trip like this where we could hook up with some walleyes, jumbo pearch, and crappies? (i.e. lake of the woods, cass lake, winnibigosh, milacs, etc) I'm looking for information like access points to the water with a place to stay near by. Also, areas of these lakes that would be worth a try. I'm ice-fishing stupid and any information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks much,

I have fished across northern minnesota for many years, being born and raised there, and I have come to the conclusion that Lake of the Woods offers you the best oppurtunity to enjoy your outing. Their are many resorts outside of Baudette that can offer you exactly what your asking for, a good place to fish, overnight stay, and a chance of stumbling across the occasional walleye. And if you asked me where the best fishing was I'd have to say Morris Point, but Adrians and the Wigwam offer the better overnight comforts, not to say the others cant be great because there are many of them. An interesting note here is that they lowered the fish limits on the lake. Some added information for possibly fishing on the lake is that the fish tend to move from bay to bay. From experience here i can say that early season fishing may be better on Adrians or Morris point and later seasons in the past have proven to be better towards zippel. But all of this depends on who you ask....people get quite particular of where they prefer on the lake...I can only go by my own fishing experiences on the lake. Also, Red Lake may be a good choice for Crappies...and you might be able to catch a few other species, however the lakes regulations are harsh for them.

I will be out from Rocky Reef Resort on the 14, 15,16 of January. Should be drivable ice by then, as I hate long hikes and do not own a snowmobile nor a four wheeler. I rented a house for the 36 hours and am sharing it with some others. Will let you all know if we have any luck.

I like Upper Red Lake and Lake of the Woods this time of year. We used 3 different Lodges out of Baudette last year, and they all were good. Red Lake was a blast, with the Crappies and the Eyes, but had to let the Eyes go back. Will be back in March for the supposedly hot time on Red for the slabs. Also look for new Welcome sign at Hillman's store on Red Lake. Made out of saw blade 60 inch in diameter. Will look sharp on there old gas sign post. Contact Cookie on this forum for some very good info on where to fish. Have a safe fishing trip. CJ
