Just 50 days till opener. That's only 7 weeks away. I'm getting ready now. When will the ice go out on Cass?

Grouch---From what you have heard do you think this is a normal spring, or an early/late spring? Hope you have good wheather for opener and most of all hope the Wally's are biting .

At least the ice is off the lakes up there. Was watching satellite pictures every day. Somewhere over the last week it all broke up. Still traces left on upper Red... but most of MN is ice free.

However, based on temps and conditions further north... I'd say N. WI and MN are about a week or more behind schedule. A little warm weather (coming next week), could catch it up nicely though. Bet Grouch may tear 'em up on his trip!

Some years ago, I was sitting at the bar at Tom's, talking to Tom. We were talking about ice. He said he remembered on year, when the channel between Cass and pike's still had ice for opener. Now that is some late ice.

As long as there's enough open water to wet a line... and the beer is cold... then the fishing should be good. Might even have a higher concentration of fish running back to the main lake with the cooler water. Pike and Walleye's start spawning before the ice is gone... finish just after ice out. Then time to turn around. Never been there before at this time... but I hope to someday.

It was just about 2 or 3 years ago that Clark at the "shoe" told me on opener you could hear your boat hitting small chunks of ice when you were moving on the lake. But i remember it was a real late ice out that year. I would probably have a rough time catching fish on a normal opener--I would think it would take a unique presentation in that cold of water. I have never fished Minn that early in the spring.
