Are you the first guy on the ice every year, or do you wait for other people to venture out first?

It was the first time out for the 2008-2009 season and it was pretty good. Here are the details:

Location-South western bay of Big Cormorant off Hwy 5 (near Swanies)

Ice thickness - 10" of really good, clear ice

Water depth - 10' with good vegetation

Fish seen- Northerns, crappies, and sunfish

Fish caught- sunfish; all palm sized. The northerns and crappies wouldnt bite any of the lures, jigs, or live baits we presented.

Bait used- I started with a neon yellow jig head and waxworm to no avail, then I moved to a plain red hook and switched between waxworms and small crappie minnows; the sunfish were easy to catch with this rig. When I got sick of catching sunfish I switched to a small artificial crank bait style lure to entice the curious northerns and crappies I had been seeing to bite (they werent interested in the wax worms or crappie minnows). For some reason the northerns and crappies wouldnt bite anything I tried, they would merely swim up and have a look at it. I eventually got so frustrated with the lazy northerns that I put on a daredevil and jigged it furiously so the flash of sunlight would blind Ray Charles; the northerns screamed up to the lure and stopped to look at it, not a single bite.

It was still fun and I went home with a limit of decent sized sunfish (so did the other 10 people in portables on the lake).

Let me know if you need any more information, I am planning on putting my permanent house out on Big Pelican in Ottertail County this Sunday. The 6-inches of forecasted snow for Saturday should make things interesting...not to mention that I am getting married on Friday. I haven't told the soon-to-be wife I am going fishing Sunday but she should know my winter schedule by now...

Talk to you later,

MHL
