Hello!
It's kind of looking like we might be done with the boats for the season!  I just got done making sure that all the water was drained from my livewells, bilge and gearcase!  I wouldn't have to worry about these things if I could just finish my garage off.
I was out with my Dad for a few hours last Sunday and we caught five keeper walleyes.  The next fish I catch will be through a hole in the ice.

Still trying to get a look at Mr. Buck!  I have had plenty of does under my treestand, but the bucks are eluding me so far.  I'm not to worried, it's still fun to get out on stand and chill!  Yes, both kinds of "chill"!  The rifle season goes through this Sunday.  The archery season is open through Dec. 31st!

For those of you that are thinking ice, it looks like I will have at least two sleeper fishhouses this winter!  So book now and tell your friends!

Tip of the week:  Remember to book your rooms for the extravaganza!!

Have a nice week and Iook for a more exciting report next week!,

Hi people!  Indian summer is here!!  But it's going to be short lived!!  Get your painting done tomorrow or Friday, because it sounds like we will be back in the "slop" on Sat..  Yes, Sat. is the deer opener here in Minnesota (firearms season).  And I'll be at my daughters first swim meet in Grand Rapids. I'm a bow hunter anyway so I'm not going to cry to hard.  I'm going to spend some time in the woods both tomorrow and Friday in hopes of seeing Mr. Big.
Fishing!  I was out last Sat. and we did fairly well.  We caught some walleyes and a couple of northerns (deep).  We were on Gull and caught some fish in 58 feet of water.  I know I've told you before that you shouldn't fish that deep!  But it was the only place I could find them.  The reason I don't get into the deep water fishing is because of the many fish that don't live after bringing them up from the depths.  Plus it is alot more for to catch and fight a fish in 35 feet of water or less.  We caught our fish on both jigs and lindy rigs and yes even this time of year people hound you if you look like you know what you are doing.  It's amazing how rude and unethical some people can be.  There's alot more to life than catching fish under someone elses boat!!  Think about it!!!  Catch them under your own boat.
Thanks to those people who have responded to my need for rental fishouses!  I've had some nice offers, and I think I'm going to have a couple of sleeperes to rent by the time we have some safe ice.  If you know of anyone looking to sell a fishouse at a good price please call me.

Tip of the week:  If you are looking for a good place to have your deer processed try Mcdonalds Meats in Clear Lake, Mn..  They know what is up and they have been around forever.

10/30/02

Boo!  Is Halloween tomorrow?  Or is it Christmas?  It sure felt like winter tonight as we were trying to round up some of those Gull lake walleyes.  We did end up keeping nine, but it was pretty miserable out there.  And a lot of you know I'm not a wimp when it comes to the cold.  You know it's cold when the rod guides freeze up!  And on the way back to the landing at 5:30 or so it seemed like it was about 60 below with the wind chill.  I'm still numb!!
It probably didn't help that I spent the first 4 hours of the day on my tree stand.  But it was all worth it because I know there are a lot worse alternatives.  Like spending the day in an office or something like that.  I did see a few deer this a.m. and two of them were bucks.  I drew my bow on a 6-8 pointer, but he didn't stop so I didn't shoot.  It was still a pretty awesome experience when you have them walk by at 25 yards and they don't know you are there.
I did hunt Camp Ripley last Sat. and boy was that an experience!  I'll do it again, but I will go in with a different mind set.  For a person that is used to hunting where there is very little pressure, Ripley was a zoo!  But boy oh boy is that some awesome land!!!  I've never seen such beautiful territory.  I saw and could have shot a doe or two but I was looking for one of those monsters like Vince Meyer of the Brainerd Dispatch shot (a 235 pound 10 pointer).  There were some other giants shot also!  I guess someone shot a 19 pointer!  That's what I'm waiting for.
I'm sorry for those of you that thought this was just a fishing report.  But this time of year I can't help but get "buck fever".  Just ask my wife, I think she thinks I have lost it!  But I know I'm not the only one.  No matter where I am, I'm looking for deer and yes that can be dangerous so don't do it!!
This year I'm going to try and arrow one with my recurve!  I'll let you know if I score.  I would have to say that the deer up here are in the middle of the "rut".  I would have to say that this unseasonably cold October has got them going a bit early.

Tip of the week:  Pray for warmth!!

Goodnight,

I guess I better get the fish houses ready!  I still have the boat ready to go, but the only call I had tonight regaurding my guide service was from an ice fisherman from Iowa that booked a house for the "extravaganza weekend" (Jan 18th)!  Who would have thought it would stay this cold for this long in October?  I was on the water Sunday and Monday, and got cancelled on Wednesday.  Sunday was a tough bite on Gull and Monday was a bit better, but we still didn't get on a large school anywhere.  Normally in October it's pretty basic to find a bigger school of nice walleyes but I haven't done that yet!  So far September was better than October.  I still have a couple more trips in the book, but today my mind switched to the other whitetails (deer).  I am getting ready to hunt Camp Ripley this weekend in search of da "turdy pointer"!  I figured as long as I'm living this close to Ripley, I better at least try it once.  For those of you that don't know, Camp Ripley is a Military Camp that is on some of the best deer hunting land in the country.  The deer are thick, and every year there are some record bookers shot.  It's a lottery, so you have to apply for a permit!  This is the second year I applied.  If I get a chance a a big one I'm going to take him but otherwise I'm doing it for the experience, it should be interesting.

Back to the fish!  The walleyes in Gull are scattered at all depths.  I have caught them at 11 feet and I have caught them at 52 feet.

Does anyone have a fishhouse that is in decent shape and at a decent price?  I want to get one or two more for my rental fleet but I also don't want to spend a fortune!!

Tip of the week:  If you are planning on fishing the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza this year, I would suggest booking a room or rooms now!!  If you wait to long you may be sleeping in one of WalleyeDan's fish houses!!

Have a nice weekend,

10/17/02
Good morning!
It looks like we are in for another cool one today with the possibility of rain or snow showers!  If we get some rain I'm sure that will take care of the remaining leaves, so I guess that means it's really fall!  These temps. that we have been getting are below the norm, so maybe summer will be back next weekend.
I was last out on the water on Monday with two regular clients.  We ended up with a limit of walleyes for them, but wow was it a run and fish day!  I can't remember the last time I had to work that hard for a limit of walleyes this time of year.  But that goes to show you that some days you do and some days you don't (hammer them).
We all started off jigging and by the end of the day I think we realized that the rig was the way to go.  We were using pretty short snells (2 feet) and large redtail chubs.  We caught fish at many different depths (19, 44, 36 you name it).
If you are in search of big walleyes in the Brainerd area I would concentrate on the Whitefish chain, Pelican or the Gull chain.  It's that time of year again where your odds of catching a "hawg" go up dramatically.  Sure, it can be chilly but that is why they make boots, mittens, hats and long underwear.  Try it, it's refreshing!!
I know it's also time for those of us deer hunters to start dreaming too!  When I see the leaves off the trees, I automatically start to think "big bucks"!  No I'm not in the lawn clean-up business.  I'm talking big whitetails in rut!!
So yes it is decision making time but either way I think we win.  If only there were a few more hours in the day.

Tip of the week:  If you are looking for some areas to fish from shore, try Hole-in-the-day on Gull Lake, the Gull Dam or the narrows on the north end of Gull.  If you are up in the Cross lake area try under the bridge by the the Wharf!  These are all good areas this time of year, and you have a good chance at landing a lunker!

Have a nice remainder of the week and weekend,

10/8/02
A-Mays-ing!!  How about Joe Mays and the Minnesota Twins!!  Just got done watching it on the edge of my rocker.  It was a great night for me, I got to do two of my favorite things (I caught a bunch of walleyes on Gull with my wife, and then got to watch the Twins win!).  Now, if I could say that I was going to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep I would think I was in Heaven!  But I know better.
The walleyes have been going "nuts" on Gull.  We caught about 20 walleyes in an hour tonight (6-7 p.m.).  We caught them in 16-25 feet of water on jigs and rainbow chubs.  We didn't catch any over 18 inches, but it was fun.  That is the way things have been going on Gull and you can tell by the amount of boats out and about.  One thing I noticed over the weekend was that alot of people don't respect their fellow anglers!  By this I mean moving right in on a boat that may or may not be sitting on fish!!  The lake is large and there are hundreds of spots to fish so please don't move right in on me or others!!  It drives me nuts!!
I haven't been on any other lake in the area as of late, but I have heard that Pelican and Edwards have been producing some nice walleyes too.  The Gull lake walleyes have been going on the north and south ends!

Tip of the week:  Thank your guide for all the services they provide:  surgeon, psychiatrist, counselor, teacher, master baiter, comedian, babysitter, tour guide, mechanic, mediator, chauffer just to name a few.

Have a nice week, sleepless in Lake Shore,
WalleyeDan
