Talked to Don Hudec still allowing 4x4 trucks on the lake but no trailors, Talked to buddy hillmen 4x4 trucks. Would not recomend cars at this time. The sun is shining here and is 44 degrees, was told there is some honey comb ice in some areas. Saw a 4x4 dueley go out of hillmens with his 5th wheel. Parked 5th wheel by the pressure ridge next to the bridge. COOKIE

Curt glad to see you made it home safe. The guys did real well where my house was last night, so there goes my theory about moving 100 yards,or maybe ite such a big school thay are 100 yards to the north east. Saw some guys way to the north east last night, must of been out of Hudecs wonder how they did. WE are fishing out of Hillmens 3 to 5 miles out, will be checking all accesses today and give a updated report. COOKIE

Cookie, Thanks for renting us your house. The boys really had a good time. The fishing was great. Our only regret is we didn't fish with you Monday night. Live and learn. Good luck the rest of the year. Will see you next year. I think the boys already have it in the works. Thank you Curt

I thought I would post a Lake Access report for West Wind. With the warm weather it is not looking good for anything but ATVs and snowmobiles for the weekend. The ice is starting to break up on the sand bars, the ice is still safe its just the problem of getting to the safe ice. Unless the weather changes dramatically our access will be ATVs and snowmobiles only for the weekend. I thought i would post this now so you could all make plans if your coming or not. The fishing has been picking up as of late, so it is still a good time to fish. I am not sure how the other accesses are holding up, you will need to contact them and find out. Hopefulley we get some colder temps and everything works out but it aint looking good. If anything changes I will let you know.

fishing was great this weekend, 2 of us limited out on sunday night in about an hour. we were about 5 miles out of westwind but didnt drive on there.

with the warm weather forecast does anyone from around there know who controls how long they allow veichels to continue to drive out? And do they close some accesses and let others remain open, because the accesses on the southside had little to no standing water this weekend but the ones on the north side didnt look like they could stand another couple weeks of warm temperature.

would like to make one more trip up the last weekend of march, so any info form locals would be helpful. thanks and good luck

No special permit is needed to fish on Upper Red~that is not part of the indian land. Best bitetime is right at sunset. Fish are biting great, accesses a little wet, but if all goes as forecasted we should be driving out there for more than a week with vehicles..just depends which access you go out of (I always check with the access owners before going out as they are the only ones who really know the conditions of the ice and heaves since they are the ones working the roads every day) Great size to the fish, found one business that has some great pictures on their site so you can actually see how their people are doing, no fibbing on their reports, pictures back it up so the fish are biting. Good luck

Just checked on Wayne,Darrin and Dan they were doing well . Found the same spot my sleeper was last night. They saw Pete and had him show them where sleeper was last night they have 25 on the ice with some that look small but they all look small to me unless there 14 inches. Had know problem driving out there in my 4x4 a little standing water but still plenty of ice at this time. Bring your water proff boots, most areas have some water from the snow melt and the ice is slippery. The first 1/2 mile is a litttle wash board and bumpy in my truck, maybe I need new shocks, all though it is a stiff suspention. The landing is a muddy befor you hit the lake but at this time also not a problem. Was able to drag house through it when I took it off the lake today. The key is to go slow on the lake and take your time. Do not know how other acesses are at this time as only been fishing out of Hillmens this year. Pete and Velmer were out about 4 miles in the spot I started out this season and getting some fish. If you can't catch fish this week with the full moon better take up a new sport. Even my brother in-law Dan the Spa Man could catch these fish, landing them might be tough. COOKIE

Hey gene, sorry to hear about your bad luck but there is no reason to run the lake down just because you cant catchem. If you read the archives you will see there are plenty of fish being caught. That is unless you think they are all telling fish stories!!!!!!! Better luck on the other lake you fish. More for us thanks!!

We rented a sleeper for this weekend but they (westwind) said they had to pull it off today. Would it still be worth it to stay on shore and take our portables out or will we be knee deep in water?

Also, could we still get out with 4x4 trucks?

Good point HawgEye about the pictures and C&R. But I don't think rolfe was talking about banning the electronics. The idea of experemental lakes sounds like a good idea. If your interested there are lakes in state parks that prohibit snomobiles, gas augers, etc., but i'm not sure about fish finders and such. You would have to look that up.

The Perch are schooling up deep in 30-34 feet of water. Small jigs and crappie minnows have been best. There is some standing water from the warm weather and the ridges are moving daily. Use caution!!

Another fantastic year on the flats. The key was to be patient--and put in your time. I have found that Myr-Mar is the most productive and friendly resort on the lake. The Ericksons are very accomodating and work extremely hard yo make your fishing experience a positive one. Mike Gannon deserves a medal--the man really knows the lake, isn't shy about helping you find fish and works his tail off for you. In my humble opinion, Myr Mar is the only choice--winter or summer (Pike Point for launch fishing).

Burns Pool,

We had our best luck at the end of Adrians road. You will need to continue driving for about 10-12 miles past the island you crossed. You will be in approximately 34 ft. This worked well for us last week on bigger walleye/sauger and perch. Hope this helps.

Guys and gals in sleeper just left with there limits, only they thought it was 10 a piece so going home with 40 fish. Put the house in a good spot, to bad its coming off the lake today, oh well theres always next year. They loved the house and the fish was a nice bonus. I would think if you go 100 yards NE. from there the fish will be there tomorrow. They dropped there lines in at 6am and caught 12 fish in a matter of minutes, they were biting when they packed up but thought they had there limit, oh well thats good for us as that means there is some fish left for the next guy. Took Dan ,Dave and Wayne out yesterday and hammered them. We fished on the ice and searched for them. We were about 3.4 miles out .they seem to be moving in a north east direction. The 2 couples in the sleeper house was doing well. Will be removing it off the lake today. Moved the house yesterday and it went well, the key is taking your time.Left the floor jack where the house was figuring I would go grab it after I got the house moved, only problem was needed the jack to unhook the house Duh? Josh and Lance just pulled out with 28 fish so they did real well, good guys and they tip well. Told Dan,Dave and Wayne where to go for 2 days ,would not listen so went out with them and held there hands. What a riot. Dan was moving his portable saturday and stepped in his 10 inch hole shook his boot off and steped in the next 10 inch hole Hilarious. Curt Ryan and Josh moved from the area I suggested and only got 5. We were fishing in some of the holes they punched. Oh well maybe next time. They did take home 20 some fish for 2 days. The ice road is a little bumpy but in good shape over all, still over 40 inches of ice. Gotta go, no one staying here for the next couple days so will be catching up on a little maitance. COOKIE
