Title: Beat that Dad!
Tip_Story:
On 04-26-00 My son Eric, 7 years old, and I were up to Warroad to visit my
folks and heard that the pike were running from spawn into Lake of the
Woods.. so we got our selves some sucker minnows and went fishing. On the
first day we did not do so well and the fishing was slow. A few fish were
being caught but no big ones. You have to let anything between 30 and 40
inches go and that is a good sized fish in its self. The second day
fishing, around 10:00 Eric was getting a bit board with it all and was not
paying attention to his line. My Brother Ike, just caught a 36 inch Pike
and we photoed it and let it go.
I then asked Eric where his bobber was. He pointed out to the lake with
out looking and said "out there". I then looked at his slack line and
noticed it racing across the water. I shouted to him to get his rod quick.
Just as I got to the rod the line got tight. I tripped the bail and let it
run for a bit. I then closed the bail and was about to set the hook when
the bobber popped up and stopped. My heart sunk because he was so ready to
catch a fish. All of a sudden the bobber started to race across the water.
I was just about to set the hook when the line got tight and nearly pulled
the rod out of my hands. The hook was set. I handed the rod to Eric and
told him to real it in. As I let go of the rod His smile was unforgettable
at least until he was nearly pulled off the jetty and into the lake. I had
to grab him and hold his shoulders for a bit as he was fighting the fish.
He finely got the hang of it and was on his own. After a few good runs the
monster came to shore. I could see the back of the fish and w
as in shock. We had a hard time even landing it with out a net. It ended
up being a 44 inch Pike. It's dimensions make it around 24 1/2 pounds. He
was so excited!!! We surprised him and had it mounted for his birthday by
Mickey Kaiser in Crookston. I have never seen that big of a fish alive in
my life. My son is so proud he could not wait to have me bring it to
school for show and tell.
